Hearing loss is a common issue that affects millions of people, and unfortunately, most causes cannot be prevented. But noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) can be prevented.
So what is Noise-Induced Hearing Loss?
Noise-induced hearing loss is caused by either exposure to a loud impulse sound, such as a gunshot or explosion, or prolonged exposure to high levels of noise. It can happen both immediately and gradually over time. Sounds below 75 decibels (dB) are unlikely to cause a problem, but if the sounds get to 85 dB or above, you can run into problems. It’s important to know the decibel levels of common sounds and the associated hearing loss risks.
Preventing Noise-Induced Hearing Loss
Fortunately, NIHL can be prevented by doing these three things:
- Know what sounds are too loud – anything above 85 dB
- Avoid loud sounds or limit your exposure or proximity to them
- Wear hearing protection when you can’t avoid loud sounds, or move to a safe distance from them
10 Tips to Help Protect Your Hearing
- Use hearing protection such as foam earplugs or custom earplugs.
- Turn down the volume on your TV, radio, music, etc. Take extra caution when wearing headphones to listen to muisc.
- Avoid loud or noisy activities/places when possible.
- Limit your time exposed to loud sounds.
- Take breaks from noise when listening to loud sounds, such as music or concerts.
- Move away from the loudest source of sound, like speakers or fireworks.
- Give your ears time to recover after being exposed to loud noises.
- Do not put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear. This includes cotton swabs, bobby pins, keys or anything else you might use to clean or scratch your ears.
- Keep moving! Exercise keeps the blood pumping throughout the body, including the ears, which keeps the internal parts of the ears healthy.
- Get your hearing tested, especially if you experience any changes in your hearing, ringing, or fullness in your ears over 24 hours.
