This hearing aid is one of the most popular styles today. It sits behind your ear with a thin wire down the front leading to a receiver that sits in your ear.  RICs can fit a wide range of mild to severe hearing losses. There are, of course, advantages and disadvantages to this style of hearing aid.

Advantages:

  • Good for patients with dexterity issues
  • Discreetly hidden behind the pinna
  • Receiver is in the ear, close to the ear drum
  • Can have a larger battery for a longer battery life
  • Easy to repair in clinic office, but sometimes needs to be sent to manufacturer for repair depending on the issue
  • Ear canal is not blocked, more natural sound quality

Disadvantages:

  • Receiver can be prone to wax because it is in the canal
  • Does not take advantage of outer ear resonance and collection of sound

Take Note: This hearing aid is a great choice for patients that are new to hearing aids. Talk to your hearing instrument specialist about this option, if it is something you are interested in.
