You want your hearing aids to perform optimally and last for many years to come. If you are a new hearing aid user or have had aids for a while but could use refresher, here are some tips for taking care of your hearing aids.
To avoid unnecessary battery drain while you are not using your hearing aids, turn them off at when you go to bed. If you notice that moisture has built up inside your aid, leave the battery door open over night to allow the internal components to dry.
Avoid exposing your hearing aids to high temperatures. This includes things like laying them in direct sunlight, leaving them in the car on a hot day, or blow drying your hair while wearing them. It’s also not a good idea to expose them to extreme cold either.
Keep your hearing aids dry. Don’t wear your aids while showering, bathing, swimming or even in the sauna. Also take your hearing aids out when applying hairspray, bug spray, perfume, or any type of spray.
Always handle your hearing aids with care. They are fragile pieces of technology. When replacing batteries, do so over a towel or cloth, so they have a soft landing if you happen to drop them. If your aids do end up hitting a hard surface, it’s a good idea to bring them into your hearing specialists to make sure they are still performing correctly.
Carefully remove ear wax from your hearing aid using the tool you received when you got your devices. Never use water, alcohol or cleansers. It’s helpful to wipe your hearing aids with a dry soft cloth every night to make sure everything is free from wax.
Bring your hearing aids in for professional cleanings, servicing and performance checks.
Store batteries in a dry location away from children and pets. Do no freeze hearing aid batteries.
